Barbarian at the Gate
Fortify your front page to handle extreme traffic
What could be more frightening than hundreds of people showing up at your door? How about hundreds of paying customers? If your website can handle the heavy traffic, this would be a dream scenario; otherwise it could very well be a nightmare of life-time regret.
Many developers downplay the importance of website performance. "So your pages load a few seconds slower, what's the big deal?" or "You can always purchase a faster server when you need to handle more traffic."
First of all, performance is not the right word. The amount of traffic a web server can handle in a given period of time is measured in "Throughput". Just to put things in perspective, a Wordpress website takes an average 4 second to load. Each page costs at least 15MB of RAM. A typical VPS hosting plan has 1GB of RAM, 60% of which is usable. This allows about 40 simultaneous requests. However, a web page contains numerous image resources. The number of requests per page can easily be over 10 if not carefully built. That means that on average, a Wordpress powered website can handle 4 users at the same time! In fact it is very easy to overwhelm a Wordpress website.
Next let's examine the statement of faster servers. Assume that we can get 10 times the throughput through 10 times the hardware. The new website can serve 40 users at the same time. That is a pathetic number for 10 times the hardware investment!
Inga builds highly optimized web systems. The same server that powers 4 concurrent Wordpress users can handle over 12,000 simultaneous users. But that is not all. Serving web pages fast is only one part of a much bigger picture. Under heavy traffic, every component of the system becomes a potential bottleneck. The network, database and external APIs all need to be engineered to respond in lightening speed.
If you don't have the time or budget to rebuild your entire site, Inga can still analyze your current site and provide mitigating solutions. At the very least, we could move you to a faster server.
